The Gazan Civil Defense also raised concerns about flooding in over 1,500 shelters for displaced persons.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Israeli occupation forces killed 15 Palestinians and injured around 20 others in the first attack of the year on the Gaza Strip.

The bombing targeted the homes of the Badra, Abu Warda, and Tarush families in Jabalia, a town in the northern Gaza Strip. “The world welcomes the new year with celebrations, and we welcome 2025 with the first massacre in Gaza,” lamented Mahmud Basal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense.

WAFA reported that two people were killed in an attack on the Bureij refugee camp. In southern Gaza, three people were killed in a drone strike on Khan Yunis’ Manara neighborhood, the Palestinian news agency said, citing local sources. Israel has barred international press from entering the territory.

Since October 2023, Israeli occupation forces have killed at least 45,553 Palestinians and injured 108,379 others. The death toll could rise significantly as around 11,000 bodies remain under rubble, according to the Gaza-based Health Ministry.

On Wednesday, Gaza’s Civil Defense also raised concerns about flooding in more than 1,500 shelters for displaced persons across the Strip after heavy rainfall in recent days. At least 497 shelters were flooded in Gaza Governorate, 170 in Rafah, 665 in Khan Yunis, and 210 in Deir al-Balah.

The effects have been particularly devastating in the designated “humanitarian zone” of Mawasi, which stretches along the southern and central Gaza coastline near the cities of Khan Yunis and Deir al-Balah. This area shelters the majority of Gaza’s nearly two million residents, who have limited access to electricity and running water.

Previously, on Tuesday, the Israeli military announced the redeployment of the Nahal Brigade, one of the most active units in Rafah, to northern Gaza. The intense siege that began in early October has already claimed the lives of approximately 3,000 people and has forced thousands of Palestinians to flee.
